Activity Levels

Every trip carries an activity level, so you know how much walking, climbing and wandering to expect before you book.

The baseline for every trip

What every trip asks of you

Our trips are made for active travellers who walk a fair bit. We believe the best way to experience the world is on foot, and much of what we plan to see can only reasonably be seen that way. So on every Wheel & Anchor trip, members commit to being able to:

  • Walk 1.6 km (1 mile) in about 20–25 minutes on their own, without a break, at any one go
  • Walk 10,000 steps in a day
  • Climb 4 flights of stairs (about 50 steps) at one time
  • Manage their own luggage, including at airports, train stations and within hotels, as porterage is not always available

By completing and signing the booking form, you agree to meet these conditions.

The three levels

Find your level

Every rating describes the core itinerary of the trip. Here is how each level feels, from an unhurried stroll to a proper climb.

  • Basic

The baseline pace, with time to linger. Basic trips ask no more than the baseline above. Days are unhurried, with activities and accommodations close at hand, so you can settle in and let the place unfold. Often found on: LiveAway trips.

  • Intermediate

Longer walks, a few steeper stretches. Expect walks of 2–3 km at one go, about the length of a 9-hole golf course, along with some unavoidable steep or uneven paths and flights of stairs. A degree of agility may help when boarding boats or other transport. As a guideline, you should be able to sit on the floor and stand up again without support. Often found on: Sojourn and Nautical trips.

  • Strenuous

For travellers with above-average fitness. These journeys call for an above-average level of fitness. Expect longer walks or hikes of a few to several hours on terrain that can be steep and uneven, long flights of stairs or steps over rocky ground, and the odd path that calls for clambering on all fours. Boarding boats and other transport may take real balance and agility. Often found on: Experiential trips.

Good to know

  • Optional excursions. Some activities or excursions may have a higher activity level than the core trip. You are always welcome to skip them.
  • Pack for yourself. We recommend travelling with one piece of checked-in luggage with wheels that you can reasonably manage on your own.
  • Mobility assistance. We regret that we cannot provide members with individual mobility assistance. We may consider requests for reasonable accommodation at the time of booking, though these may be denied due to local factors over which we have no control.
